The German Franz Xaver Winterhalter was one of the most sought-after and famous portrait painters in the 19th century. His talent for drawing was discovered and encouraged early on. He was apprenticed by the French draughtsman and engraver Charles Louis Schuler. From Grand Duke Ludwig I he received a scholarship to study painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He worked among other things in the studio of the portrait painter Joseph Karl Stieler. After his studies he went to Karlsruhe in 1828, where he found employment as a drawing teacher and painted portraits of the Grand Ducal family. In 1834 he moved to Paris. With the support of King Louis Philippe, Franz Xaver Winterhalter rose to become the most sought-after portrait painter in France. He painted portraits of the entire royal family and the leading members of the court. This success led to further commissions from many European aristocratic and ruling houses. The picture of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) is one of his most famous works. The painting was the official state portrait for the emperor. This most famous painting of the Austrian Empress did much to spread the fame of her beauty. The original is in the Sisi Museum in the Hofburg in Vienna.
