Buxtehude is a small town on the Este, a tributary of the Elbe. In 1135 it is called "Buchstadihude", where - "hude" means landing place.
Since 1197 it is the seat of a Benedictine monastery. The town charter is granted in 1328. In 1363 the small but important town, as a crossing of the Elbe, becomes a member of the Hanseatic League.
In the 13th century the town fortification with three gates is built. The marching gate after a picture from 1830 was made as a tapestry embroidery.
