Leonardo da Vinci can be considered the greatest painter of the Renaissance, perhaps even the most important artist of all. He worked in painting as surely as in engraving, sculpture and architecture. He also devoted himself to physics, geometry and anatomy. He worked in these fields as successfully as in painting and is therefore considered a universal genius.
The painting of the "The Last Supper" used here as a model is after the "Mona Lisa" probably his most important work. Leonardo produced this painting for the refectory of the monastery Sta. Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Since it is however attached to an outside wall, it unfortunately did not withstand the weather. Almost nothing of the original colours has been preserved.
