The American painter Winslow Homer was born in Boston in 1836 and died in 1910 in Prout's Neck/Massachusetts. Winslow Homer painted and drew equally well; initially he worked in oil, later in watercolor technique. After initial work in America, he traveled to France and England. These years brought him into contact with the sea and the people on its shores. After his return he worked only on the coast of Maine. He is considered an important marine painter and one of the greatest American painters of the second half of the 19th century.
