The Russian artist Wassilij Maximowitsch Maximow lived from 1844 to 1911 and his life took place mainly in the countryside. In 1866 he had left the academy of arts and retired to a village to paint his village themes. The painting "The Diploma" is supposed to represent his wife and daughter.
