The Dutchman Willem Kalf, christened in 1619, died in Amsterdam in 1693. Kalf can be considered the most important still life painter in Holland.
Silver bowls, porcelain plates, Venetian glasses and vases are his favourite objects, to which he gave a lustre and effect with his sophisticated painting technique that no other painter could achieve.
