Raphael, whose civil name is Raffaelo Santi, is one of the most important artists of the Renaissance along with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. At the age of twenty he began his training in the Perugino atelier in Florence. During this time his work was strongly influenced by the works of Leonardo, Michelangelo and Signorellis. In 1509, the Pope appointed him as construction manager of St. Peter's Church in Rome. His most famous works include the Madonna della Sedia in Palazzo Pitti, the Sistine Madonna in the Picture Gallery in Dresden and portraits of church dignitaries.
