The Dutch painter Willem van de Velde the Younger was the brother of the famous landscape painter Adriaen van de Velde and the pupil of Simone de Vliegers and his father Willem van de Velde the Elder. He moved to London at the age of 40 and became one of the most famous painters of ship paintings and naval battles. His paintings bear witness to an excellent power of observation and great artistic skills. Van de Velde the Younger was a painter who knew how to achieve the dynamics of the stormy sea as well as the exact reproduction of a ship in his paintings.
