Paja Jovanović was born in 1859 in Vrsac. He studied painting in Vienna from 1876 to 1884, after which he travelled to a number of countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, broadening his knowledge. When he returned to Vienna, he soon found a large and respected circle of admirers. Jovanović is the most important representative of Yugoslavian realism; especially of that variant which is called "Academic Realism" due to the influence of the Vienna Academy. He died in Vienna in 1957. Both original pictures are property of Narodni Muzej, Beograd.
