Johann M. ten Kate (1831-1910) studied at the art academy in Den Haag, lived temporarily in Amsterdam and later in England. His painting "The Little Scourge of Children" is painted with an almost photographic meticulousness and yet remains extraordinarily vivid. His other motifs are Dutch sailor pictures, which he was inspired to paint during his study trips to the East Indies and the Dutch colonies of the time.
