Sir Joshua Reynolds, born 1723 in Plympton, died 1792 in London, is one of England's most important portrait painters. In 1768, he was appointed the first president of the newly founded Royal Academy and was ennobled in connection with it by King George III. His painting style resembles Rembrandt's technique with its strong contrasts of light and dark. Apart from his portraits, he also painted children's pictures over the years; however, he acquired his reputation with his portraits.
