The "Black Madonna of Czenstochau" in the monastery of Jasna Gora near Czenstochau in Poland is known far beyond the borders of the country. According to the legend it was painted by Saint Luke. In a report from 1382 she is mentioned for the first time. The painting was smashed by mercenaries during a robbery, but the pieces were found and reassembled by devout Christians. Traces of the sword blows can still be found in the face of the Madonna. The Polish king Casimir the Great gave the image to the monastery.
