Sir Thomas Lawrence was born in Bristol in 1769 and died in London in 1830. He was a student of the London Academy and took over the artistic legacy of Sir Joshua Reynolds. In 1792 he became court painter to the King and in 1820 president of the London Academy. His portraits show a very elegant brushwork and an extraordinary fresh and decorative colouring. "Pinkie" is a particularly good example of this.
